Gaia Overview
Gaia is an online community based around the creation and maintenance of an online avatar. Users of the site choose every aspect of the avatars appearance, selecting everything from hair and eye color to clothing. To buy things for the avatars, users must have enough currency. There are two types of currency on Gaia, Gaia Gold and Gaia cash. Gaia gold can be gotten by participating in different parts of the site, such as playing games and posting in the forums. Gaia cash can be gotten by paying real money or by participating in promotional offers on the site. Gold is the primary currency on the site, and only a few things can only be purchased using cash. One of the quickest ways to earn gold is by playing the mmorpg zOMG!. This game is quite large and presents numerous opportunities for players to interact with each other and gain gold. On zOMG! players can collaborate with each other, forming crews that can greatly enhance their ability to gain gold. Crews can also band together to go on missions to advance through the game, increasing players chances of success. Crews are temporary alliances, constantly being formed and unformed. During gameplay players talk about many things, including their real lives. Gaia also offers several other mini games, as well as rally stages where users can race one on one.
Gaia also has a social networking aspect to it. Users can maintain a profile that other users can view. Like on Facebook, people can friend you, but unlike facebook, it is more anonymous on facebook. I have several friends on Gaia who I have no Idea of their real identities. Friending on Gaia is informal, and many of my friends friended me after just being in the same crew for a while.
Gaia also has a large and diverse forum section, where users discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from problems with zOMG! to whether or not people like furries. There are also fan clubs, called Guilds, for certain things. Once again, Guilds cover a large area of interests, including things like anime, politics, and religion. One guild is an adult only furry community.
Gaia is a community with many different types of users. It offers multiple different features for people searching for different things. Its user base is similarly diverse which makes Gaia interesting to explore.
